RMI Provides Culturally Relevant HomesAs it has for decades, RMI partners with North American churches, individuals and organizations to provide assistance, along with local Haitian churches and communities, to those who are in desperate need. Due to natural disasters such as the 2010 earthquake, floods, hurricanes, and extreme poverty, the need is acute. In meeting with national church leaders, we have determined the kind of structure that would be culturally appropriate and best provide dignity, stability, security, and a sense of hope for the future. RMI partners with them to determine the recipients and placement of these homes.
The homes are a 12’ x 30’ permanent block structure. Each home includes: foundation, concrete slab, front porch, front and back security doors, front/side/back security windows, middle partition wall, bathroom with toilet, front and side stairs, concrete finish on block walls, interior and exterior painting, metal roof, Bible and songbook and follow-up with a local Haitian church that will remain in contact with the family. A home provides dignity to a family who has almost nothing; it provides a sense of normalcy. It provides a secure place of hope where they can grow and build their family. Each home costs $18,500*. Optional solar power system to run lights and devices is approximately $6,300. The actual cost will depend on what kind of system is put in, how big the unit is and other variables. Contact the field leadership at [email protected]. *Price subject to change depending on material costs. Two ways to be involved:1. You can provide a home for a family in great need.
You can cover the entire cost of a home, or you can help with a portion of the home cost. 2. Your church or group can provide a home as well. Here are some ideas of groups who can provide a home:
You can organize a team of people to come for a week to build a home. RMI will use Haitian labor as much as possible, but US teams are encouraged to come assist in the onsite building of homes. RMI’s “Homes for Haiti” is not just providing shelter. You are providing a “Home today for Haiti’s Tomorrow”. These families are counting on us to help them at this desperate time in their life to provide a stable, culturally relevant, secure environment providing hope for their family. Donate online or send a check to RMI designated "Homes for Haiti". To schedule a team or to get more information, please call 239-368-8390 or email RMI here. |
In February 2016 a team was able to deliver a food box to Madame Selemen, a woman who had recently lost her home to a fire. She was living under some tarps and tree branches. The team was especially touched with this elderly woman’s situation. The US C3 partner took on other projects but they also purposed to build a home for Madame Selemen. When the other projects were cared for, they started to raise funds in earnest for this home. Fundraisers were held, kids gave their birthday and Christmas money, co-workers pitched in, Life Groups took up offerings and in 10 months, the money was raised for the home. The next time the team visited they met on the cleared land to pray for Madame Selemen and her new home. By June 2018 the home was finished and just needed plastering and painting before she was able to move in. What a prayer time they had when they met with her again. Being the hands and feet of Jesus transformed this widow’s life. |
