The Need is Great
Today, Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Over 80% of the national requirements for rice (the food staple of Haiti) are imported at very high prices. With approximately two thirds of the country’s population living on less than $2 per day, Haitian families are finding it extremely difficult to provide food for their children. Recent statistics from UNICEF indicate that malnutrition now accounts for 40% of all deaths in people under the age of eighteen.  Hunger is rampant in Haiti, even in the countryside.

Natural disasters have exacerbated the problem of hunger in many rural communities by continually destroying locally grown crops and creating food shortages.   The crops that many families depend on often are destroyed by wind, flooding, or drought.  This causes great hardship, malnutrition, and even starvation.  In light of this great need, RMI has partnered with a number of organizations to provide food relief to those in extreme hunger.

RMI’s Response
Through Food For Health, RMI is addressing these serious hunger needs using pre-packaged meals.  These nutritious meals are scientifically created to help those suffering food deprivation, severe malnutrition and other life-threatening illnesses. The meals, through the vitamins, minerals, and protein provided, transform the health, growth and physical well-being of children as well as adults.

The meals are rice based and chicken flavored, both of which are a staple in the average Haitian’s diet. Here is a complete list of the Nutritional Information.

As with all our programs, RMI partners with local Haitian churches and leaders to identify the individuals and families to receive food based on their need.

These meals are not only used as gifts and aid, but are the same meals served in the Hope for Kidz Hot Lunch Program.  The results in this program have been dramatic.

Between Food for Health and the Hot Lunch Program, RMI distributes more than 2.6 million hot meals per year.

“You should see the children who have been eating this food!  ...the thickness and color of their hair, the complexion of their skin and the smiles on their faces. These kids are totally different.  In times past the children were so tired by 10 a.m., they just couldn’t  focus on learning.  Now they are full of energy and able to learn the whole morning!”

~ Pastor Anthony Moise, Ducis, Haiti

All Madame Timo had left after the hurricane was the splintered wood of her home, a dish or two and a small chair.  She gathered her meager belongings and fashioned a lean-to for her to live in.  Life had been hard before the hurricane but with her home, gardens and animals gone, she found it almost unbearable.  She begged God for some relief, some kind of help.  God answered her prayers when her pastor stopped by with some visitors from her church’s Sister Church in the US.  They brought her a box of food, listened to her story and encouraged her by praying with her.  It really touched her heart that these visitors would come to her very humble home, such as it was, pray with her and give her food.  She was thankful that God heard her prayers.  The food would last until the next harvest when she would be able to slowly get back on her feet.
